Congratulations to the Yr9 STEM (Science Tech Engineering Maths) club for their efforts at the 2019 Express&Star Challenge.
They were tasked this January with designing a product that was of benefit to people or the environment.
They decided to create an alarm which would alert a deaf person to household danger. They wanted it to be connected to a domestic network (like Hive or Alexa), wherein a household alarm – burglar, smoke or carbon monoxide – would trigger a vibrating alert in a small device that would be located in a pillow or cushion. With the generous and expert help of our own Mr Sargent, they were able to program the circuit – not only to do this, but also to send alerts via social media to a carer. They called the whole package ‘Sleep Shield’.
They had to present this product to four separate judges, alongside competing teams from St Peters, Ormiston, Wednesfield High and others from across the Midlands. Their presentation was so good they walked away with the prize for Best Team: the judges were blown away by the way they supported one another, spoke without notes and knew their onions inside and out when questioned.
The sponsors Kuka Robotics and our STEM mentor from Moog Engineering have both invited the team to their respective headquarters for a reward.
