Vocabulary Practise

We know one of the hardest parts of your child moving from primary to secondary is all the new vocabulary. New vocabulary needs to be used around 10 times before it sticks and we understand it, so it’s important your child uses this vocabulary at home as well as at school. You can do the following to help your child use this vocabulary at home:

  • Get them to give you the definition
  • Do spelling tests
  • Make a poster about the vocabulary using pictures and definitions
  • Talk about them at the dinner table and get your child to tell you how they use these words in lessons
  • Play the linking game where you take it in turns to say a word and then the next person says another word and explains how it links
  • Play Pictionary
