British Art Show 9 Learning Project – Artist Larissa Shaw’

Throughout November Moreton’s Art department and it’s dedicated KS3 young artist have been working alongside the practitioner Larissa Shaw as part of the British Art Show 9 Learning in Schools Project.

British Art Show is a landmark touring exhibition, widely recognised as the most important recurrent exhibition of contemporary art produced in the UK. Organised every five years, it brings the most innovative and exciting contemporary art produced in this country to four UK cities. This year Wolverhampton has been lucky enough to be a host City. British Art Show 9 explores three overarching themes – healing, care and reparative history; tactics for togetherness; and imagining new futures. Many of the artists in BAS9 investigate identity from an intersectional perspective, taking account of multiple identities that coexist such as class, ethnicity, and gender. In Wolverhampton the exhibition explores these ideas in a critical dialogue with Wolverhampton’s cultural history.

Our young artists and Larissa, over three day long workshops, tackled the BAS9 theme and created wonderful and imaginative ‘unfunctional’ fashion garments that encompassed the ideas of bringing diversity together, multiple personalities coexisting, culture and togetherness. The pupils created the garments from scratch, developing hand sewing and manipulation skills, machine sewing techniques, as well as dying, printing and embellishment skills. To finish off the workshop and share their experience the pupils showcased their work through a paparazzi filled fashion show around  Moreton school.

The British Art Show will be coming to Wolverhampton from 22nd  January – 10th April 2022.
