Commonwealth Connections Project

This Year Moreton school will be working with the British council, The Birmingham Educations Partnership, Youth Sports Trust and Commonwealth Games Organising Committee as part of the Commonwealth Connections project, where by 60 schools across the West Midlands have been twinned with schools throughout the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth connections objectives are to bring the Commonwealth nations together, connecting children and young people in primary, secondary and special schools in the West Midlands with young people in schools across the Commonwealth in an exciting school twinning programme.  This will embrace and champion the youth, diversity, humanity and pride of the region and the Commonwealth. It will expand pupil’s knowledge of global citizenship and skills for life, through a greater understanding of the Commonwealth, its diversity and similarities. As well as developing the pupils understanding of team building, sporting events, expanding their cultural capital, they will also take part in creative and Performing Arts workshops and events.

Through the Commonwealth Partnership, we will be working with other schools in Wolverhampton and Walsall, as well as schools from our partnership Commonwealth Country, Ghana.

As part of this ongoing event and lead up to the Commonwealth games, the Wolverhampton and Walsall cluster have been asked to create a group Art project, which will encompass the ethos of the Commonwealth and showcase Wolverhampton, Walsall and Ghana’s cultural diversity, as well as links to the environment, and sport.   Moreton have selected 25 pupils to take part, as well as an additional 10 ‘Art Ambassadors’ to help lead and participate in workshops with the Artist Anne Roebuck throughout the year.

 Thursday 20th January kicked off the Wolverhampton and Walsall Clusters project, combining both Sports and Art. The 10 ‘Change Makers’ and 10 ‘Art Ambassadors’ from Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy, Oakmeadow CE Primary, Wilkinson Primary School, Palfrey Junior School, Leamore Primary School and Moreton School all come together as part of the event. The ‘Change Makers’ got the opportunities to work with Tom Davies a commonwealth and British Judo Champion, as well as Steve Frew a Commonwealth Gold medallist Gymnast, taking part in team building exercises and developing a greater understanding of what the commonwealth games means to the UK. The Art Ambassadors for each school were introduced to the artist Anna Roebuck, discussing ideas and aims for the up and coming art project and workshops, creating sculptures and banners made from recycled plastics, linked to Ghanaian art movements, as well as the sports, diversity, saving the planets, and the world as one.

All pupils really enjoyed the day and loved the opportunity to work with other schools within the cluster. We look forward to the up and coming workshops and sharing our successes and experiences with you!
