Unlocking Imagination: Moreton’s Journey to Foster Lifelong Readers

Dear Parents and Carers,

Reading is at the heart of Moreton and our ethos is that the opportunity to become a confident, inquisitive and proficient reader is a fundamental skill all students should maintain and develop throughout school life and beyond. As such, this year, we have developed an exciting and engaging tutor reading programme, where all students will be exposed to a variety of challenging texts – not only within the technical aspect of the reading and vocabulary, but also within the societal topics they raise and questions they pose around modern, cultural issues.

This forms the basis for tutor time each day for Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students, as well as two sessions per week with Year 10. As the experts in the classroom, staff are reading aloud to students while they follow along, demonstrating active engagement. This research-led project is designed to help all students make progress towards their reading age and give them the knowledge, skills and vocabulary in preparation for playing a vital role in wider, twenty-first century society, here in Wolverhampton or beyond!

I am pleased to report that we are planning to take all of our KS3 students to our local library, right here in Low Hill, during this term. This means that all students will complete a library induction and become familiar with the workings of a public library, as well as giving them the opportunity to borrow a book on loan with their own, personal library card. We will be doing this as part of core English lessons and further details will be made available at an appropriate time. We thank you in advance of your support with this.

We are working hard to foster a culture of reading for pleasure here at Moreton, enabling students to unlock the gateway to endless possibilities and we’re so excited for where our reading journey will take us this year, and in the years to come!

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or queries at rdangerfield@aatrust.co.uk

Yours faithfully
