“Moreton students are challenged to think mathematically, speak mathematically and use mathematics to solve knowledge rich problems. Students are explicitly taught conceptual & procedural knowledge which, when mastered allows them to solve a variety of mathematical questions.”

The Moreton maths department offers a challenging curriculum that interleaves mathematical content. The curriculum is built upon an Engelmann mastery approach to learning; the teacher will explicitly model mathematical knowledge by first breaking it into atoms, then ensure all students have success at each atom, before students move onto completing the full mathematical routines. All students will be guaranteed to receive feedback many times throughout a lesson and all students are expected to respond by mini whiteboards or by choral  response to teachers. We expect 100% of our students to have success before moving on through the curriculum.

Finally, the Moreton maths department believes strongly that it is every student’s right to retrieve knowledge from memory. At the heart of our programme is spaced practice and revision. This is implemented through low stakes revision quizzes and revision tasks set for homework.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The Mathematics Department runs Chess Club during lunch times for KS3 students. The club gives students the opportunity to make new friends, develop problem solving skills and to improve chess ability. Alongside the chess club, the department also holds revision sessions for year 11 each week, during the holidays and before mock exams. Throughout the week the maths department supervises revision of all year groups in our computer rooms for students unable to revise at home.
